Hello Tweeters,
I was visiting friends yesterday ,and coming home late,as of 9.30 PM.So the
first think going on the Patio to taken the feeders down.I have an old round
feeder with a dome hanging under the eves small 6 1/2 inches in diameter
,the dome I lowered to about 3 inches,so only the Red-breasted
Nuthatches,Chickadees and The Buick's Wrens visiting this feeder.But I had a
Small Mammal inside this small feeder,The body was all inside but the tail
was curled down and flattened.He was not disturbed by my presence,I really
could not tell what this animal was.I went inside and got a flashlight,he
was not bothered at all keep his head down and feeding on the unsalted
crushed Peanuts.I only saw halve of this small mammal.so I clapped my
hands,and than he was flying in to the trees,I never had a look on the face
and also I never saw one of this creatures.I took the feeder down and looked
in my Mammals Books.The best description was in the Mammals of Washington
and Oregon,by Tamara Eder.The tail appeared flatten ,because of long hairs
that extend only to the sides.And the small size.This is the first for me to
see,and I don't know how common this Flying Squirrels are here.I will leave
my one feeder out tonight,maybe I can get a flash photo,since he was not
bothered by my flashlight.
I like to find out from other birders of there experience with this Northern
Flying Squirrels.
