A few recent posts made me think that it might be helpful to post a technique I've gotten in the habit of doing concerning my use of cameras so that I am ready in a moments notice for those times when a flighty bird is staring me in the face waiting for me to take its picture.

One thing I do as a matter of habit is when I turn my camera off for an extended period of time I put all the settings into modes that lend themselves well to spur of the moment shots. That way, when time is of the escence, I can pull out my camera and start shooting right away. I have a DSLR camera so this often means switching to an automatic mode and perhaps even putting on a different lens. However, this technique is applicable for all types of cameras.

I case in point may be that you were just out shooting photos in sepia mode for some reason on your point and shoot at a party or something. When you put your camera away put it back in an automatic mode so that at the very least you can get some decent shots when time isn't in your favor. If you have more time after that then you can start fiddling with the controls to try and better the shot.

Anywho, a little off topic but very applicable to those spur of the moment bird shots, it has saved me a time or two.
