Wait until April if you can. March is after many Winter birds leave but before Spring arrivals. Cranes & Ferruginous Hawks are mostly gone, but few insectivores arrived yet. Check Stuart Healy's site for monthly checklists www.aztrogon.com . Check Tucson Audubon trips at www.tucsonaudubon.org/fieldtrips/index.htm . Some birds we once thought were summer only, like Trogons,
Violet-crowned & Broad Billed hummers, Black-capped Gnatcatchers,
Cassins & Botteris Sparrows are here in March, they're just harder to find. One group, Thrashers,
are actually easier to find in Feb & March when they sing. They're
hiding later in the year. Best places to visit (all in Finding Birds
in SE Az) are Agua Caliente (I lead trips every Tuesday am), Madera Cyn, Patons in Patagonia, Patagonia lake, Garden Cyn at Ft Huachuca, San Rafael Grasslands (breeding plumage Longspurs & Baird's Sparrows) and Mary Jo's in Ash Cyn.
