While it is distressing that such a important reserve has been destroyed, I think it's pretty egregious and ignorant to chalk it up to 'socialism'.? Habitat destruction sadly is an evil found in any government?- just look at how we're destroying the Rio Grande valley in the name of 'Homeland Security'.

For all of you who ever spent a week or a day birding at Hato Pinero,
which lies on the expansive llanos of Venezuela, this news item is
sobering (follow link). This is a news article published today. The
issue discussed has been brewing since Huga Chavez 'took' office
several years ago. In a nutshell, Hato Pinero is on the verge of
being 'recovered' by the socialist government and planted with crops
and animals for the 'good' of the people of Venezuela.

The article indicates that Hato Pinero occupies 45 hectares, when in
truth, it is a 400,000+ acre natural area in which hunting has been
banned for nearly a century. Sightings of Jaguars and many other rare
species of mammals and birds are seen with ease. It is a favorite
stopping point on many Venezuelan birding trips including trips by
Victor Emmanuel Nature Tours, and many others.

Goodbye, tropical birding paradise.

The original page's language is Spanish which I had translated
automatically by Google. That explains the rough translation.

To all socialist-minded Tweeters, take warning. This is the kind of
malignancy that we can look forward to in this country if socialism is
allowed to prosper here.
