Wendy and I visited Volunteer Park late Sunday afternoon and happily ran
into Kevin Purcell who pointed out the glorious bird roosting in a fir tree.
We, along with others, observed the bird for about 70 minutes while it
slept, flew to a bare branch in a maple tree, and silently flew off to the
west. Sightings this easily accomplished are rare, in my experience.
Owling usually consists of wandering around in the dark imitating an owl's
call for hours until you're so cold or sleepy you give up and vow to not try
it again; and you don't for a while, but the magic of owls draws you out
again and again. Success guarantees that you'll become hooked for life. I
believe there are eleven possible species in Washington; wouldn't it be cool
to see them all in one year?
