Today 8 of us wandered through the fog at Nisqually on a cold windless day.
Visibility was limited but we still had a good day.

There is water, water everywhere and lots of waterfowl, but they are
scattered throughout the refuge with no big concentrations anywhere. We did see the
usual MALLARDS. NORTHERN PINTAILS, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, SHOVELERS, and
AMERICAN WIGEON. We also saw both CANADA and CACKLING GEESE.

The highlight of the day was seeing two GREAT HORNED OWLS side by side on a
branch about half way between the Nisqually overlook and the ring dike. I
thought they might be on a nest by now but I guess not.

We did see a couple of nice mixed flocks that included BLACK-CAPPED
CHICKADEE, both KINGLETS, BROWN CREEPERS, BEWICK'S WREN, and DOWNEY WOODPECKER. One
flock had a RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKER in the area.

A couple of our group that left early thought they saw a couple of PINE
GROSBEAKS near the start of the ring dike but they were gone when we came back
through the area.

All told we saw 45 species for the day.

Mammals seen included BLACK-TAILED DEER, RIVER OTTERS, EASTERN GRAY
SQUIRREL, and HARBOR SEALS.
