Tweets,

With nice weather predicted for the mountains I decided to grab my
snowshoes, drive to Stevens Pass, and hike the Skyline Trail to see if there
were to be a repeat of last year's winter finch bonanza.

No such luck. It was a nice hike on well-groomed crunchy snow with blue-blue
skies and not too cold for comfort.

Grand total of four Gray Jays and two Ravens on the hike to Skyline Lake at
5100 feet and back and around the parking lots at the sky resort. Seems the
abundant cone crop of last winter has been exhausted and the birds are
elsewhere.

Just curious. Does anyone have any idea how frequent a winter visitation
such as we had last year might be? How often should we expect such an
abundant cone crop at a given location and how can we predict such events? I
know there have been other winters with interesting winter finch
concentrations at Stevens Pass, but not this time.
