Subject: [Tweeters] Roosting Western Screech-Owl in Yakima

Hi Tweeters,
On Dec. 16, 2008, I found a Western Screech-Owl roosting in a tree on
the west side of the Yakima Greenway Pathway north of Sherman
Park. Sherman Park is accessed off Hwy 24 just east of I-82. It is
straight north of the K-Mart store.
The screech-owl has been seen frequently including today during the
daylight hours as it sits on the ledge of a cavity in a large
cottonwood tree about 50 feet off the pathway. It was seen on the
Yakima CBC on Jan. 4 and was the only one that was found on the
count. In previous years we have had several screech-owls respond
to tapes of their calls. The group in whose territory this owl was
roosting was very excited to be able to see it in daylight through a
spotting scope.
Photos of this beautiful little owl can be seen in the new photos
folder on my website:

and on George Vlahakis's website:

If anyone is coming to the Yakima area and would like to try to see
this owl, please e-mail me for directions.
