Tweeters,

Jamie Acker and I took off late on the evening of July 1st and headed to
Liberty area near Blewett Pass. We had a fabulously cooperative Flammulated
Owl fly in to our calls. It landed in a Douglas Fir about eye level no
more than 15 feet from us. It hooted softly for nearly 1/2 an hour as we
watched it through our telescopes!! We had great views and were even able to
manage a couple of decent digi-scope photos!! I'd be glad to share the
photos if anyone is interested. Contact me off line at _geopandion at aol.com_
(mailto:geopandion at aol.com) and I will send them to you.

We continued southward to Walla Walla and the Columbia Gorge. Highlights:

1) Am. White Pelican, 1000-1500 including hatch-year birds near Wilson
Creek on SR 28 along Crab Cr.

(No sign of any Ferruginous Hawk at the Wilson Creek nest site)

2) Acorn Woodpecker, 4 near Lyle, 1 at the old granary tree on the south
side of the Lyle-White Salmon Rd (two telephone poles east of where Balch
Rd. heads north. The granary tree is about 350 yds to the south). Two
others were at the abandoned house about 1/2 mile north on Balch Rd (east
side). The last one we saw was on a snag across from the Balch Rd cemetery.

3) Cordilleran Flycatcher, 2 pairs at the end of the pavement along
Biscuit Ridge Rd

4) Ash-throated Flycatcher, 6 on trail off SR 14 east of Lyle, 2 at
Balch Rd cemetery

5) Hermit Warbler, 1 male responding to a play back along FR 23 north of
Trout Lake

6) Green-tailed Towhee, pair at Biscuit Ridge

7) Grasshopper Sparrow, 1 responding to play back at MP 78 on SR 28 just
east of Wilson Creek

8) Lesser Goldfinch, 4, including males doing display flights and
singing in the Garry Oaks at the Balch Rd cemetery

Finally, lots of hummingbird activity at Hummingbird Crossing, Tom Lamby's
place on Biscuit Ridge Rd (Rufous, Black-chinned, and Calliope)

Happy July 4th!!
