Yesterday my wife and I decided to watch the Tacoma Freedom Fest Airshow at
Ruston Way, from across the water at Browns Point. In spite of heavy boat
traffic, we observed several MARBLED MURRELETS. We had three in view at one
time, but there were likely more. One of them had a wild jet ski pass within
20 feet and did not even dive! Also had a couple of PIGEON GUILLEMOTS fly
by.
In addition, there were some GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULLS, a single DOUBLE-CRESTED
CORMORANT and a fair number of CASPIAN TERNS flying past the Point. Some of
the Caspian Terns were carrying fish and heading in towards the Port of
Tacoma. This would be indication, that a small portion of the once thriving
Commence Bay breeding colony still remains.
