When we moved into our house back in 1991, just northwest of Licton Springs
Park, we occasionally saw a Steller's Jay; they seemed to breed on the North
Seattle Community College campus, but the density of crows hereabouts kept
them in check, I hypothesized.

The last few years they've been much more aggressive and apparent. And today
I have proof that they're breeding somewhere in our yard (probably in the
thicket between us and our neighbors): four very scruffy fledglings sitting
in the scrubby pine tree just outside my living room window. They're barely
able to fly, so they must have a nest quite close. Interesting that they've
managed to push westward; I wonder if the crows ever WERE what was keeping
them in check?
