This morning as I was on the roof cleaning off the moss, I heard a Cooper's
Hawk call from near the birdfeeder. A few moments later, a Steller's Jay
appeared on the feeder. I figured out that the jay mimicked the Cooper's
Hawk. But why? This afternoon I got my answer. This time, there was a
Douglas Squirrel on the feeder, who departed abruptly upon hearing the
"Cooper's Hawk", leaving an empty feeder for the jay. Smart bird.
