I just returned from visiting family and friends in Massachusetts but
escaped for 2 quick days of birding. I wanted to plug Massachusetts
Audubon and highlight a few birds for the Tweeters family. We went to
three Massachusetts Audubon Nature Reserves; Broadmoor, Daniel Webster
and North River. Mass Audubon maintains 45 Wildlife Sanctuaries. Members
get in free, non-members pay $5. I was amazed at this system of reserves
and opportunities they afford to the public. Habitat varied at each (of
the ones we visited) with main types being wooded wetlands, open
wetlands, old orchards and open fields. We also visited Scituate Harbor
not an Audubon sanctuary, but listed on Mass birder. Day one we saw 30
species in 3 hours and day two 43 species in about 6 hours (including
travel). My highlights in no particular order

Greater Crested Flycatcher

Indigo Bunting

Eastern Bluebird (including an ant foraging lesson from an adult to
several young)

Juvenile Black-crowned Night Heron

Red-bellied Woodpecker (juvenile we think)

Ruby throated Hummingbird

Laughing Gull

Least Tern

Great Black Backed Gull

Bobolink

Baltimore Orioles

I grew up in Massachusetts, but did not start birding seriously until an
adult in Washington. It was a bit weird returning home and seeing birds
for the first time that were obviously all around me as a child.
