This afternoon I watched a juvenile crow slide down a metal stair railing 3 times, calling the whole time. Each time it sort of flopped down to the ground at the bottom, flew back up to the top of the railing and slid back down. (This was at North Seattle Community College.)

Here at home, I've been watching a crow family with 2 youngsters who are slowly learning about food. I've watched the parents lay food in front of the youngsters in a sort of "there, now you eat that" gesture, but the babes seem to only want to eat things the parents put directly into their beaks and cry loudly at this until they get fed directly. A couple of days ago, a parent put a cracker down (mea culpa...) and a youngster started eating it! A few bites into it, though, the juvie had what really looked and sounded like a temper tantrum and the parent had to take over. Fun to watch.
