Just weighing in with my own experience.

I've always cleaned my sensors with the Pec Pad/Eclipse fluid method
and never had a problem. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 tries to get all
the dust off. Since switching to the Canon 40D and 5D Mark II,
however, I have not had to clean a sensor in over a year -- the
self-cleaning mechanism works wonderfully.
