Hello, Drew and Tweeters,

This year has been a good one for Green Herons in Clallam County.
The most reliable spot this year has been the forests and back waters
near the Elwha River mouth, accessible from the dike trail on the
west side of the river. We have sightings there on 4/4/09, 4/9/09,
and 5/9/09. Maybe it was the same bird. I wonder if they might be
nesting there.

Other estuaries with overgrown riparian vegetation are the best bet.
In past years we've seen them or have reports of them at the mouth of
the Hoko River, at the mouth of the Clallam River at Clallam Bay
County Park, at the estuary of Jimmycomelately Creek at the south end
of Sequim Bay, and in the wetlands near the boat launch in Gardiner
at Discovery Bay. One inland spot is at Lake Pleasant near Beaver.
Last fall there was one sighting on the Dungeness River at Railroad
Bridge Park near Sequim, along one of the river's overgrown side
channels. Most sightings are mid-late summer and early fall,
suggesting post-breeding dispersal.

Please let me know if you find one.

Just wondering if anyone can fill me in on a reliable spot to watch
Green Herons on the upper Olympic Peninsula? Feel free to email me
directly,
