The fish that the green heron is eating is a black bullhead, Ameiurus melas. They have clusters of wicked spines at the base of their gill slits. Good on the green heron, chowing down on an introduced species!

At the Arboretum yesterday, a Green Heron was doing a very nice job
plucking small, dark fish from just below the surface. Can anyone
identify the fish species from the photo here? Thanks!
