Subject: [Tweeters] Battle Ground birding - nothing rare

Hi Tweeters,

A few birds have started to move around a bit here in Battle Ground, Clark
County. A CHIPPING SPARROW on 7/27 was a surprise - I only get a few each
"Fall" migration. Probably a bird just moving around locally but a
nocturnal migration enthusiast friend of mine north of Denver, CO is
recording Chipping Sparrows already - more altitudinal migration though. I
was surprised to hear a SOLITARY SANDPIPER yesterday evening at about
9:45pm. I haven't had one of those here since May of 2006! It must have
been in the small pond in the woods beyond the mammoth houses across the
street and took off for parts unknown (I wonder if it came in the same day
as the Solitary Sandpipers that were at Ridgefield NWR on Monday and
Wednesday). An AMERICAN BITTERN flew over the house several evenings ago -
doubtless one of the pair that is breeding in one of the remnant marshy
spots in the development. Finally, an ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD was a nice
surprise this morning - I last had one in May 2008!

I guess these were the rewards for suffering through the 100+ degree temps
down here that maxed at 109 degrees yesterday afternoon!
Keep your eyes and ears skyward.

Jim
