Dear Tweeters,

Thanks to Diana, Mary, Jeff, and several others--the beetle that amazed me and the dog last night appears to have been:

TEN-LINED GIANT CHAFER (Polyphylla decimlineata), AKA 10-lined June Beetle.

I'm surprised I hadn't encountered one of these enormous beetles before.

The website that several people sent,"BugGuide" (http://bugguide.net/index.php?q=search&keys=Polyphilla+crinita) was very helpful.
