Greetings All,

This morning early there was a Black Tern at Nisqually. It could be seen from the viewing deck at the Twin Barns. Also in the area was a single Wilsons Phalarope. In addition there appeared to be at least 3 pairs of Bullocks Orioles in the area. Perhaps the most unusual were numerous Red Crossbills in the tall cottenwoods. I counted a group of about 35 flying into the tops of the trees between the Twin Barns and the river, but it sounded like there were more groups scattered about. I have not noticed Red Crossbills taking a particular liking to cottenwoods before and found it rather noteworthy. The cottenwoods were in thier finest, with "cotten" everywhere and covering many patches of openwater.

Cheers and good birding...

Bill Shelmerdine, Olympia
