Myself, Dave, & Sherry Hayden saw a female Black-backed Woodpecker at Elk Heights in May of 2008 (if I remember the month correctly).? As far as I know, we were the last ones to post a sighting of this species from that location.? We watched her forage for a bit, and then she flew off passed the road and was soon gone.? I've returned a few times since then without any luck.? And, as has been noted, besides being an old burn now, many of the trees are down.? It is still worth stopping at, as many other species are still present for now.
