I went to the the River S unit of Ridgefield NWR this morning.? Nothing rare to report, but the refuge was very birdy.? A quick walk of the Kiwa Trail alone (escorted by a relentless swarm of mosquitoes) yielded over 30 species of birds.? My favorite were the numerous WILSON'S SNIPE that were engaging in their winnowing display.? If you enjoy watching and hearing this, the Kiwa trail is the place to go (just bring a lot of toxic bug repellent).? Also along the trail, I heard, but did not see, at least 2 SORA and 1 VIRGINIA RAIL as well as 2 calling A. BITTERN.? Very cool to hear these along with some very vocal A. COOTS and the various passerines.? It really is late Spring at its best.? There were still 2 WHITE PELICANS about (I think that they were on Rest Lake if I read the map correctly) in addition to several CINNAMON TEAL and BLUE-WINGED TEAL and 1 GREAT EGRET.?
