So guess I'll pitch in with our current backyard hummingbird behavior.
We've rearranged our feeders this summer and have three hummingbird feeders,
a sunflower feeder, and a couple of water features that are all viewable
from most of the back windows of our house. We had a record (for us)
number of both Anna's and Rufous hummers this year, and a couple of weeks
ago, the visits to the feeders dropped dramatically, although we're still
getting a handful of females/juvies of both species. But in the last few
days, this adult male Rufous has aggressively taken over pretty much the
whole backyard. He sits in a flowering Styrax tree and chases off
everything at every feeder and water feature, harassing chickadees and
Steller's Jays alike away from the sunflower feeder, bombing everything at
the birdbath thirty feet from his perch. This macho little guy even seems
to be doing some J diving. Birds are so weird.
