I decided to do a little investigating (yes, there may have been a touch of
trespassing involved) at the base of the radio tower I mentioned in my
earlier post, and it looks as though the nest may have come down of its own
accord. Part of a surrounding fence and a tower walkway are badly
damaged/dented, and there is a nest's worth of detritus at the base. It
occurs to me now that we've had a very, very dry month, then suddenly got
rain ... and the added weight the rain brought to the nest may have caused
its collapse. I poked through the wreckage a bit and found neither eggs nor
dead chicks, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that all that was lost was
the nest.
