Subject: Nisqually



Hello Tweeters,

Yesterday (Wednesday, 6/17) I went to Nisqually with two
visitors from the Chicago area. Trail options are limited to the Twin Barns
boardwalk (pin pile) loop. The trail down the Nisqually River beyond the
Nisqually River Overlook is closed as is the trail from the Visitors' Center
west to McAllister Creek. On the other hand we had a good day. We saw two
large flocks of Band-tailed Pigeons feeding on Elderberries along with Cedar
Waxwings. We also spotted three or four Red Crossbills. The only water
birds we saw were Wood Ducks including a mom with a flotilla of young. A
notable goal is at the end of the "riparian forest outlook" side trail (400
feet long). Standing on the trail end overlook, look to the left about 10
feet away and find the Rufous Hummer on her nest about eye level. The eggs
are hatched. Good binocular and scope views. We also saw a Bullock's
Oriole on the roof of the headquarters building.

As usual, Nisqually NWR is an excellent place to visit, and the
impressive progress toward restoring the brackish/saltwater marsh is
dazzling! Have a wonderful trip
