Susan and Tweets,

WDFW got a call last week regarding this nest, by the property owner, and yes - it fell. There was no maintenance work being performed on the tower. The nest fell due to its own weight. Unfortunately, but understandably due to the fall, none of the chicks made it. It was recommended they leave the nest be and let nature take care of things, as long as it was not complicating any aspect of tower function. Otherwise, the chicks were to be buried and nest broken apart and not collected, in accordance with federal MBTA and state regulations. They were quite disappointed about the nest fall and resulting failure, as we all were.

Local cell tower folks and the contractors they use for tower work are usually very good at contacting DFW in the rare event that they are interested in possible emergency work options, if absolutely needed, around an active osprey nest on a tower. In my experience, most have an established protocol of leaving work to periods when nests are inactive, whenever possible. On that note though, as Kelly points out, if suspect activity is noted near an active nest, please call the DFW hotline or your local Regional office so it can be looked into.

Thanks,

Chris Anderson
