20 of us just returned from a fast paced trip to NE wash.

We visited new areas not birded on previous trips, except Sullivan Lake, and we were rewarded with a good trip. Our route was I-90 to Sprague Lake, sr 231 to

Little Pend Oreille NWR, Amazon Marsh by Sullivan Lake

to Big Meadow Lake, the hill loop east of Barstow, Sher-

man Pass and Aeneas Valley rd.



Salmo Pass rd. is closed to at least July 4th, a large

boulder is in the middle of the road. Rookery rd. in

Little Pend Oreille NWR is open.



This area is truly stunning. Bayley Lake and and Big

Meadow Lake are truly jewels, both with nesting Bald

Eagles set in beautiful mixed forests. The yodeling loons

at dark on Big Meadow lake was a treat.



Highlights:

Bufflehead: 1 male, Reardon pond

C. Goldeneye: 3 broods, 1 Bayley Lk., 2 Big Meadow Lk.

Turkeys: 5 different times, numerous

C. Loon: 3 Big Meadow Lk., no young

Ferruginous Hawk: 1 sr 231

Peregrine Falcon: 1 I-90 near Golf course rd.

Merlin: 1 Beardslee rd.

Western Screech Owl: 2 Big Meadow Lk.

Barred Owl: 1 Big Meadow Lk.

Am. Three-toed Wdpkr: 2 Big Meadow Lk.

Black-backed Wdpkr: 6 2 Big Meadow Lk. at hole, 3 the

burn noted by Gina Sheridan, feeding young, 1 male out

of nest hole, 1 Sherman Pass, drumming and seen

Least Flycatcher: 1 1/2 mile south of Gallaher-Barret rd.

Pacific-slope Flycatcher: 4 1 Orient, 3 Republic

Red-eyed Vireo: 1 Little Pend Oreille

Pygmy Nuthatch: 2 foraging in aspens, pines nearby, 1/2

mile so. of Gallaher-Barret

Townsend's Solitaire: 2 Little Pend Or.

Am. Redstart: 4 Little Pend Oreille

N. Waterthrush: 9 1 Little Pend Oreille, 4 Amazon marsh, 4 Big Meadow Lk.

Clay-colored Sparrow: 3 from Beardslee and McNitt rd.

The corner here is full of birds.

Grasshopper Sparrow: 1 one mile up sr231 from sr23



We ended the enjoyable stay with 154 species and several indelible memories that only birders treasure.
