Key question is how much time do you have? If you're short, just bomb
down I-5 to the Bay area. There will be no ducks yet so skip the
wonderful Sacramento refuges. The key birds will be shorebirds, early
landbird migrants and Seabirds in Monterey. Cutting off to 101 or 1
will cost you 2 extra days or so. Remember, this will be peak fog
season. Once you're close, there are really three great areas.
1.
Bolinas -- Point Reyes . The roads are awful but the birds are great.
This is a huge area with often complex, messy access. It's the premier
spot for rarities.
2. South Bay -- Mtn View's Shoreline park and
adjacent Palo Alto Baylands are hard to beat. Easy access, great
weather, and hordes of birds. The shorebirds concentrate at high tide
but are invisibly too far out at low tide
3.
Monterey -- a million Sooty Shearwaters will in the Bay with thousands
of other shearwaters, alcids, skuas, jaegers, & petrels plus
hundreds of whales and dolphins. DON"T MISS THIS. Monterey Bay Whale
watch & Shearwater journeys offer serious seabird trips, but you'll
see plenty on just a whale watch tour.
