Yesterday late afternoon I walked around the Montlake fill prior to the WOS
meeting (a standing room crowd for an excellent presentation). At one point
a male Anna's hummingbird zipped around my head twice, then landed quite
close (oh to have had my camera....) and displayed its gorget. I backed off
a few steps, and the bird zipped straight at me which made me instinctively
duck, then it landed on the same perch and displayed again. My first thought
was that there was some other hummingbird around but I saw none. I am
wondering, does this species nest at the fill? Would this aggressive
behavior be nesting defense? Or are they just rowdy in general this time of
year?
