Today 11 of us enjoyed a great walk at Nisqually under clear but cold skies.
It was fairly pleasant when the wind didn't blow but it was cold when it
did. At least the birds cooperated.

We didn't see many waterfowl but we did see a good variety. The most common
was NORTHERN SHOVELER and NORTHER PINTAIL. We did see one EURASIAN WIGEON
and COMMON MERGANSER and COMMON GOLDENEYE as well as a pair of GADWALL out
near McAllister Creek.

We had four woodpecker species missing only the PILIATED WOODPECKER. The
HAIRY WOODPECKER we saw was in the riparian area near the parking lot.

Raptors were about but not in numbers we had seen recently. We saw a couple
of BALD EAGLES, one in the nest tree across McAllister Creek, NORTHERN
HARRIERS, and RED-TAILED HAWKS. There was a GREAT HORNED OWL in the nest tree at
the junction of the boardwalk from the twin barns and the Nisqually River
trail. We did not see any juveniles, but one was reported seen on March 7.
Last year we saw young February 21.

Passerines were scarce but we again saw many YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, as well
as JUNCOS, BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE, BUSHTITS, and both KINGLETS.

There was a single DUNLIN that flew in to the pond near the parking lot and
there were KILLDEER at the pond outside the new dike near the twin barns where
we saw the EURASIAN WIGEON.

Nothing spectacular but we did see 56 species for the day. The HAIRY
WOODPECKER and VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOWS were new for the year giving us 90 species for
the year.

Mammals seen were BLACK-TATILED DEER and EASTER GRAT SQUIRREL.
