Thanks to those of you who posted about the short-eared owls along Rawlins
Rd. This afternoon from 2 to 4 we enjoyed and photographed wonderful views
of three as they hunted and fended off competing Harriers in the marshes
behind the dike at the end of Ralins Rd.

This was a new lifer for us as we visited from North Carolina. A beautiful
day and a beautiful and amazing bird -- a feisty diurnal hunter. We
actually saw one attack a harrier from above and drive him away from the log
jam by river. And we got close enough for a great picture from the car when
one landed on a fence post right next to the road.

Also new to our joint life list were the hundreds (thousands?) of snow
geese and golden-crowned sparrow.
