The earliest record I have for Sooty Grouse hooting in the Olympics
is Feb. 22, 2007, heard by John Bridge on a winter snowshoe hike at
4800 feet on the southeast slopes of Blue Mountain. Maybe they start
even earlier, since so few people visit that habitat in winter. Blue
Mtn. is southwest of Sequim, one of the large peaks that overlooks
the Sequim-Dungeness Valley.

The grouse are quite vocal in the second half of March in the Olympic
foothills above 1000 feet near Sequim.

A visiting friend asks me when the Blue Grouse start booming. I
haven't been in the right habitats in W. Washington to hear them,
just in the Okanogan.
