it will be interesting to see if something similar holds true around here (central Samammammammammammish).... for much of the last few months of 2008, Barred Owls were doing their hoot and hunt show in my forest. Though I haven't heard or seen them since, the number of Grays around appears noticeably smaller. I've only seen two in the last few weeks, which is a very low number historically, though perhaps it's just a matter of being obvious. Indeed, I've seen more Dougs in that time, which can't be a bad thing...

When the Barred Owls moved in my woods, the gray squirrels were gone shortly after. We still see them randomly, but they don't seem to last. About a year ago I disturbed a Barred owl on the ground with a dead gray squirrel. I went back to the house to get my camera and when I returned 5 minutes later both the owl and its lunch were gone. I was surprised that a Barred Owl could carry something that big.
