After reading of a SAY'S PHOEBE at the mouth of the Wind River
in Skamania County, I had to make a try for this species which has eluded
me for decades. Susan and I found the bird in the same place that Rick
Taylor and Tina first located it yesterday. The phoebe was again visible
from the boat launch parking lot on the north side of Highway 14 along
with a dipper that was also reported yesterday. This seems like a highly
unusual spot for a Say's Phoebe, perching on sticks protruding from the
river bottom and feeding over open water. I imagine that the river is
slightly warmer and is one of the few open areas with insects in the
county.
We also found one TURKEY VULTURE over Beacon Rock State Park, two
more in Stevenson, three at Home Valley and two more at Underwood. In
Klickitat County we saw seven TURKEY VULTURES at Catherine Creek Preserve
near Lyle. WESTERN BLUEBIRDS were checking out the nest boxes at the
Balch-Lyle Cemetery on Balch Road and at the pond there were two Western
Pond Turtles sitting on a floating log despite the 46 degree temperature.
Wildflowers are coming on strong in the eastern Columbia Gorge with the
endemic Columbia Lomatium just starting to open.
Yesterday we had our first of the season OSPREY at Horseshoe Lake
in Woodland, Cowlitz County.
