The day started out sunny but a blustery wind was blowing so there
were big waves and white caps on the Sound. A couple of COMMON
GOLDENEYE hens were in the quiet water of the marina. Dennis Duffy
saw about twelve SANDERLINGS heading north. There was an equal
number of BRANT heading in the same direction. A few MEW GULLS were
around as were DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS. Too windy to stand
comfortably on the public pier. There was a little less wind as the
Edmonds Marsh. But the water level continues ridiculously high. We
lost ground for shorebirds last August when the Marsh was kept at a
flood level and no one in any level of local government would take
responsibility for the situation. They have zero credibility since
development has cut the Marsh off from the Sound, SOMEONE controls
the tide gate. It appears that spring shorebirds are not going to
find mud in the Marsh, either. What a shame. The GREAT BLUE HERONS
were around but none were on the nests. A sub-adult BALD EAGLE did
perch in one of the heron nests for a while. ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD was
around but still no sign of RUFOUS at the Marsh although they are
being seen in Edmonds yards. GREEN-WINGED TEAL, MALLARD, GADWALL,
and BUFFLEHEAD were in sight. So were RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD, BLACK-
CAPPED CHICKADEE, SONG SPARROW, and GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW. Lots of
ROBINS and CROWS, too.
