Subject: [Tweeters] confused sapsucker

Hello, tweets.

I had a Red-breasted Sapsucker drumming persistently on a piece of
metal on a utility pole across the street this morning. It was there
over a period of an hour, then a Pileated Woodpecker landed on top of
the same pole and began drumming, displacing the sapsucker to a
nearby dead tree where it resumed its noise-making. A flicker had
been on the same pole above the sapsucker earlier! We had better not
place all our utility wires underground.

I have seen sapsuckers here a couple of times in midwinter, but this
bird seemed to have breeding on its mind. I suspect it will be
disappointed at not attracting a mate and move on. It was really a
surprise to hear it when we stepped outside this morning.
