Beautiful morning at both the Carnation Marsh and Stillwater Wildlife Area. Given the season and time of day, the birds were quite active, with many swallows flying in and out of cavities, various other birds with nesting material, and others singing their own praises.

While looking at a Mourning Dove at the marsh, we happened to catch great views of an Osprey coming into an area just a few yards from the road. Seemed strange at first, as we knew that the spot the bird was headed for was not a typical fishing area. Turned out that he stopped to pick up a large piece of nesting material, which he then took to a nest in a tree some distance away. We've never actually seen an Osprey do any nest building, so this was exciting.

Also of note, at Stillwater, we noticed that the Bullock's Orioles have arrived. Well, at least one has. It was pointed out to us by a photographer who spotted it just before we walked up.

A heads up: law enforcement officers were checking for WDFW permits, so make sure that you have yours if you park in the lot at Stillwater.

happy birding,
