Hey tweets, there's hot, and then there's volcanic. Yesterday, the
Fill was volcanically hot - this, despite the fact that Mr. Model
Airplane Man was flying his annoying toy jet in the playfield; the CUH
plant sale has attracted a bazillion people; the Opening Day regatta
folks seemed to feel incomplete without playing piercingly loud rap
music; and the weather was less than perfect: when it was not raining,
it was blowing a gale. The birds are coming through anyway, and you've
got to get out there to find them!

Best birds:
Solitary Sandpiper on Shoveler's Pond
Green Heron on Main Pond
3 Western Tanagers in Surber grove (2 males and a female)
Hammond's Flycatcher in Surber grove
Wilson's Warbler in Surber grove
2 Band-tailed Pigeons in Surber grove - I think they're nesting.
2 pairs of Wood Ducks in Surber
numerous Vaux's Swifts overhead
late Lincoln's Sparrow in Surber

If you can get out to the Fill this morning or afternoon, you should
know that parking in the Dime Lot (E-5) is free all day today. All
other parking is closed, due to the plant sale. Conditions today
should be a little better in some respects - the regatta will be over,
and usually Mr. Model Airplane Man is gone on Sundays. The plant sale
will continue, but few plant people actually get out into the Fill
itself, so even in vast numbers, they don't affect the birds much. The
weather is supposed to be iffier, but there should be sun breaks
throughout the day. Stuart MacKay, the preeminent birder from
Scotland, always used to say that the best time for warblers was
immediately after it stopped raining. There should be numerous times
tomorrow when that occurs. Will I see you out there? I hope so! -
