Nice to read others stories. ?So, here goes:
I was a biology major (temporarily) at Bowling Green St Univ in Ohio in the early 80's. ?I was dreading chemistry and took all the fun courses first. ?I took Ornithology with Dr. Elden Martin in the spring of '82. ?Prior to that I had only a passing interest in birds. ?But in that class I caught the bug. ?We spent lots of time in class with books and specimens, but the field trips were a revelation. ?Northern Ohio is blessed by one of the eastern flyways, and blessed with Crane Creek St Pk (provided by Davis Bessey nuclear power plant nearby!). ?Crane Creek is on the southern banks of Lake Erie and birds congregate there to gorge on food before the long flight over Lake Erie. ?We made several trips to Crane Creek that spring. ?But our big day was in mid May where we saw 81 species including 14 warblers and a yellow-headed blackbird (very rare in OH). ?I've been hooked ever since.

All these Tweeters stories inspired me to send a long note of thanks to Dr. Martin for a class that has enriched my life in many, many ways.

By the way, birding at Ft Ward St Pk on Bainbridge Island this morning the highlights incuded my first Wilson's warbler of the year and 10 Harlequin ducks.

Good birding,
John White
