I really, really apologize for not posting this earlier. This note is in reply to Michael Hobb's Marymoor posting today. I was at Marymoor last Friday (5/1) and was watching the Red-tailed Hawk nest on the snag. I saw a Bald Eagle suddenly appear on top of the ridge flying just above the tree tops. His target was the snag. A Red-tailed Hawk was furiously trying to catch up to him from behind, but the eagle dove on the nest and looked like it snagged something from the nest. He disappeared immediately behind a screen of trees followed by the Red-tail. He reappeared briefly and it looked like he was trying to shift something between his talons - then he disappeared permanently. I couldn't see if he actually had something in his talons.

If the eagle got a nestling, which I am assuming is the case, this could explain the abandoned nest.
