Subject: [Tweeters] Whole or cracked corn for mallards?

When mallards started visiting my yard regularly they were eating the
safflower seeds that had fallen on the ground under my birdfeeder, and I
tried giving them some of the whole corn kernels I had been giving to jays
and squirrels. They readily eat the whole corn, which I put out in fairly
small quantities to avoid attracting rodents overnight. I've heard that
cracked corn is easier to digest, and I'm wondering whether I should use
that instead. I guess I'd prefer to use whole corn because it seems like it
would keep better in our humid climate, but I really have no solid
information about this. Websites that talk about this seem to be aimed at
people who are raising poultry, which isn't exactly the same thing.

Does anyone know about this?

Thanks,

Barbara Miller
