Subject: [Tweeters] Point No Point & grosbeak or crossbill question

May 7 - beautiful day at Point no Point.
Highlights included 20+ Western Tanagers, Evening Grosbeak & Black-headed Grosbeak.

My question: do we get Pine Grosbeaks around here? ?I saw a large group (20-30) of finch like birds flying and grazing in the big leaf maples and alders. ?At first I thought they were Purple Finches. ?But their wings seemed too dark (dark gray - almost black). ?Red Crossbills make more sense based on the maps in the filed guides. ?But their bills did not look like crossbills (they were very active and my neck was killing me from the pursuit - so, I might be mistaken). ?Also, they were only marginally smaller than the Western Tanagers in the same tree. ?So, by size they sound more like Purple Finches or Red Crossbills.
Any guidance here?

Thanks,
John White
