I spent Friday 5/8/09 at bottle Beach, Tokeland and Westport Photographing
shorebirds and came home with close-up images of a nice variety. Bottle
beach had about 40 red knots in the area where I was and I suspect there
were more up and down the shore. There was a smattering of short-billed
dowitchers, a ruddy turnstone and numerous dunlins, least and western
sandpipers. While the tide was still in I drove to Tokeland, one of my
favorite places to photograph. There were about 100 marbled godwits, a few
whimbrels, and 8 ruddy turnstones, all of which were my target species. I
was fortunate to get good images of all of them. I stopped at Westport on
the way back and was surprised at how many brown pelicans were present. They
were constantly flying back and forth along the outer edge of the marina.



On Saturday, 5/9/09, I spent some time at the UBNA, aka "the fill" and was
fortunate to have a brightly colored western tanager male land in the tree
right in front of me. I was almost too shocked to take pictures! I did
recover, however, and came away with a few decent images.
