Dropped by the Montlake Fill today after work, desperately hoping to add Black Swift to my personal Fill list.? Saw them about 1/2 mile due east of the Fill yesterday, flying very low just before the worst of the rain started.? No luck, but Surber was hopping with excellent birds.? For those not familiar with the area, Surber is the street that runs south from 41st (the street the CUH is on) just east of the CUH parking lot.? From 4:15-almost 5PM, I had 29 species in that area, most notably a pair of Western Tanagers, a lone Western Kingbird in the spruce in the yard right at the corner of 41st & Surber, and best of all, two more Red Crossbills flying over.? More specifically, Yellowish Crossbills:? both female.? the Fill itself was relatively quiet, though it's great to have loads of Wilson's Warblers back.? In addition to Connie's posted late Golden-crowned Sparrow behind the CUH (still there,) I had another one right where the main pond comes
closest to the trail.? I'll be back tomorrow, dreaming of Bullock's Oriole...
