I could not see it, but I sure heard a PYGMY NUTHATCH in tall firs at Little Mt. Park immediately south of Mt. Vernon this morn. I was just getting started up the 1.5-mile walk to the summit (the gate was locked) when I could hear the bird giving the characteristic twittering notes, for about a minute; there were a number of RB Nuthatches audible overhead here as well. There are just two others for Skagit County of which I'm aware, one the the Wiggers had in late June one year in the extreme eastern N. Cascades section, and a July bird I had at the Mt. Hardy burn nearby many years back. But for other coastal or lowland birds, I can only remember a couple reports in Sept in the area, one that sticks out is a small flock at Larrabee SP about 30 years back.

The other notable bird was a DUSKY FLYCATCHER calling near the summit. The most numerous migrant in the area was BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK, with about 20 present. A Mac was on territory near the summit, a W. Wood-Pewee had arrived, and as usual Townsend's Warblers seemed to be singing on territories throughout.
