I bought a package of nesting material from Audubon and it was?cotton, which the swallows will deign to use a bit but sure don't get real excited about. I know how much swallows love feathers.

This has survival value for swallows because the time they spend searching for nest material is almost the only time besides fledging day when they are vulnerable to ground based predators.? I'm watching a male vg right now sitting on the driveway picking up a piece of grass, he'd much rather have a feather.
