Collin, Tweeters,

An odd looking warbler, for sure. It suggests a lot of features in common with an immature male American Redstart: the grayish head with moderate pale eyering, the orange-yellow edges of the breast, but the yellow is more extensive than it should be and the irregular black bib is aberrant. Dunn and Garrett's Warblers mentions American Redstart X Nashville Warbler as a probable occurrence. American Redstart could help account for the extent of black on the breast in a way few other species might. It's not anywhere close to the range of typical Hermit X Townsend's hybrids. At first glance, it's even reminiscent of the extinct Bachman's Warbler. Too bad that's not possible.

A starting point might be American Redstart hybridized with a warbler that shows a yellow undertail and perhaps considerable yellow below, and that also occurs in the west: Nashville, Wilson's, Yellow. I don't know if a definitive answer is possible, but this should certainly arouse some careful speculation.

Bob

Today my friend Sam Riley and I went birding around my house on Queen Anne. We spoted 2 WARBLING VIREOS, 10 EVENING GROSBEAKS, WILSON'S , YELLOW , TOWNSEND'S, and ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER. Plus an extremely weird looking warbler, probably a hybrid of some sort. I don't even know where to begin describing it, so please check out my photos. We observed it for 20 minutes right by Parson's Garden.
