Yesterday 14 of us enjoyed a great walk at Nisqually under mostly sunny
skies and cool temps. And the birds cooperated.

The highlight of the day was a WILSON'S PHALAROPE on the mud flats between
the parking lot and the twin barns. It was sure hard to pick out initially
but we all got good looks. Also in that area were a couple of LEAST
SANDPIPERS and some KILLDEER.

Most of the waterfowl are gone as the pond is being dried up but we did see
GADWALL, NORTHERN SHOVELERS, MALLARD, and CINNAMON TEAL. There are
several families of CANADA GEESE behind the twin barns. Other waterfowl seen
included both HOODED and COMMON MERGANSER and WOOD DUCKS.

We were able to relocate an active RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD nest along the
Nisqually side but the 2 chicks are about ready to fledge any day now. WARBLING
VIREOS were everywhere as were SWAINSON'S THRUSH. We also had our first
CEDAR WAXWINGS for the year as well as our first WESTERN WOOD PEEWEE and
WILLOW FLYCATCHERS.

All told we had 46 species for the day with the WILSON'S PHALAROPE, WESTERN
WOOD PEEWEE, WILLOW FLYCATCHER, SWAINSON'S THRUSH, and CEDAR WAXWING being
new for the year, giving us 130 species for the year.

Mammals seen were EASTERN GRAY SQUIRREL and BLACK-TAILED DEER.
