Tweeters,
I was asked if I'd check on a possible Vaux's Swift roost at Fort Lewis
(tipped off by Rod Gilbert, field biologist at the Fort). There's one at the
place Rod suggested: the chimney at the Range Control Office on Kaufmann
Ave. I'd just about given up at sunset when I spotted two swifts flying in
the area. My wife and I then watched as one swift finally flew in, then
waited another couple of minutes until the second flew in.
I didn't see any other swifts until I turned to take one more look and saw
two more swifts, both of which flew into the chimney within seconds of each
other. No other swifts showed up as twilight faded into dark.
Rod mentioned that he'd seen about 40 swifts last week, so they're roosting
someplace.
May all your birds be identified,
