A quick reconaissance of the Fill today at noon was mostly a snooze, with the following exceptions, both found in the perpetually flooded cottonwood grove at the north end of the Fill:? singing Yellow Warbler and Western Wood-pewee.? The warbler was easy to find, by following the "Sweet sweet very sweet" song, but the pewee, though also very vocal,?required considerable work to track down.? Both were seen from the slightly mucky path that runs along the north side of the cottonwood swamp, along the fence that butts up against the gravel trail from Wahkiakum Lane to the big dumpsters and the north parking lot.? Also seen today, in various puddles, ponds and sloughs were at least 7 Cinnamon Teal, and two big softshell turtles basking!? Several brown fledgeling Tree Swallows were mixed in with the adult Tree, Cliff, V-G and Barn Swallows.
In less recent news, I found my FOY Willow Flycatcher calling incessantly (but not yet singing) in the willow grove below the east CUH parking lot about a week ago.
Birders, please heed Connie Sidles' recent post about the impending close of the comment period on the management plans for this wonderful birding spot.? My 2 cents worth:? Keep all the remaining grassland!
